JAVON JACKSON - CD RELEASE FOR NEW RECORDING - FOR YOU
Javon Jackson - Tenor Saxophone, David Williams - Bass, Jeremy Manasia - Piano and McClenty Hunter - Drums
A former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers who also put in time with such jazz giants as Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton and Ron Carter, saxophonist Javon Jackson keeps the fires burning for straight ahead jazz on his 20th release as a leader. “I’m a product of all that,” says the 53-year-old saxophonist-composer-educator. “I was raised in that experience of swinging, and that’s what I really have an appreciation for.”
Jackson shows his appreciation on For You, his 20th recording as a leader and third on his Solid Jackson Records.
Jackson has worked for or with the greatest jazz artists of the century, including Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb and Benny Green.
In 2012, Jackson was the recipient of the prestigious Benny Golson Award from Howard University in Washington, D.C. for recognition of excellence in jazz.
Jackson finished his undergraduate degree and obtained a master's degree from the State University of New York at Purchase, where he also taught. In 2013, he accepted the position of director of the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Division at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music, Theatre and Dance.
